I am marrying a man who is in contention of being dubbed the Philadelphia Phillies number one fan. I often joke that the movie "Fever Pitch" was written about our lives; him a school teacher, me in business, meeting in the fall and not fully understanding his love of the game until the crack of the bat at spring training when I start to become a baseball widow, etc. Now, don't get me wrong, I am actually a big fan myself, I grew up with baseball, and going to games together is one of my favorite things to do.
However, a little thing has happened since we picked our October 25th wedding date, the Phillies have gotten good. And I mean really good. Comfortably sitting in first place good. Poising themselves to be in the playoffs, and even the World Series good. Which adds an interesting twist, since our destination wedding in Florida would fall right in the middle of the World Series. I choose not to think about this..
What I have thought about it is that with the amount sports and sporting events, there is always a wedding falling on a night of a "big game." I thought it would be a fun idea to think of various ways that the love of a sport could somehow be incorporated into a design detail. I mean, lets be honest, we plan and pick the majority of the wedding detail, why not throw a decorative or edible nod to something that means so much. A few thoughts..
They do say a way to a man's heart is through his stomach, right??
Not so much design of your venue, but design of your groom. You can have cuff links made from salvaged seats of various ballparks!
These are my personal favorite. Maribeth, from Red Ribbon Studio, shared these pictures from a fun loving couple who are big Chicago Cubs fans. They used a picture of the marquee at Wrigley Field to create place cards, and each table was named after one of their favorite Cubs players.
As the Phillies season continues, and the chances of my World Series wedding become more real, I am sure that I will be adding more ideas to this post. I do think, for the right bride and groom, its a fun way to personalize the event with something quite unique. Of course, when I mentioned to my fiance, the idea of somehow incorporating the Phillies, he actually wanted to help! Go figure!

just added your blog to my google reader, so excited to read about a philadelphia bride! i'm getting married at the ballroom at the ben next june & i'm trying to figure out ways to incorporate the phils into our wedding as well. my only idea so far: rehearsal dinner.. at a game! i'm learning to love hotdogs and beer at the game tho!
